Matahua Cottages are two very comfortable and stylish self-contained waterfront cottages situated on the shore of the beautiful Waimea Inlet, near Mapua village.

Located in the heart of the Tasman region, surrounded by the vineyards of Nelson's wine country, the accommodation at Matahua Cottages makes an ideal base for day trips around the Nelson region to the Abel Tasman, Kahurangi and Nelson Lakes National Parks.

The cottages are part of our 5 acre organic property, a mix of fruit trees, vineyard, gardens, and regenerating native New Zealand bush which stretches around the estuary shore. Nelson's Waimea Inlet is famous for its wading and migratory birds: pied stilts, oyster-catchers, bar tailed godwits, herons, royal spoonbills are all regular visitors at Matahua.

The cottages are sunny, warm, private and tranquil, and perfectly equipped for a relaxing holiday with hammocks, good books, board games, barbecue, brazier, kayaks, outdoor bathtub, stand up paddle boards and endless views to gaze at.

Whilst secluded and private, the cottage accommodation is also extremely accessible to Nelson; just 20 minutes (24km) from Nelson airport and less than 5 minutes to the coastal village of Mapua. Mapua's thriving wharf area has cafés and restaurants as well as galleries representing local artists.

  • Miro cottage is right by the water at the end of a private drive on a farm property. This ex: apple pickers cottage is retro chic at its best. All mod cons and wonderfully furnished in 50's style. We will certainly look forward to staying again. 5

  • We had a lovely two nights in Miro cottage at Marahua Cottages. Such a lovely spot next to the estuary with beautiful native birds. Some of the most delicious organic apples I have ever eaten also. 5

  • The cottage is set in an old apple orchard on the edge of an estuary with sweeping views of the mountains. It's simple, stylish and comfortable. The host was friendly and very helpful without ever intruding on our private enjoyment of the cottage. The birds in the esuary, in the trees and wandering the lawn were an added treat. 5

  • Perfect location, wonderful comfy bed, tho we both attempted to claim the feather pillow. Lovely greeting and we will definitely return. The only suggestion is to have nice coffee available in the cottage. 4
